Summary
This journalism master's project includes a professional work component and a research component. The professional work component is a photographic essay "on the traditions and culture of Bulgarian speaking Muslim communities in the Rhodopi mountains of southwest Bulgaria and one Muslim village, Galata, north of the Stara Planina range ... While religious expression is gaining new vigor in the Muslim villages in the Rhodopies, and foreign groups from the greater Muslim world are providing support for that revival, some of the most time-honored local traditions are being abandoned. The photo essay is a record of the flow and ebb of some of these forces and traditions." (p. ii) Includes field notes and examples of work. In the research component, through interviews with Bulgarian professionals, the author provides "a sampling of the practices of working Bulgarian photojournalists and some insight into their cultural and professional environment. The reasearch [sic] question is twofold. The first question is how do Bulgarian photojournalists relate to the topics and people they photograph, and what forces and values shape their professional practices in the field ... The second part of the research question is how these practices and values relate to how American photojournalists claim they work." (p. 82) The results of these interviews "suggest a close-knit community of photographers facing many professional challenges in a changing social and political environment. When these themes are compared to the concerns of American news photographers, there are a fair number of similarities between the two groups, with difference concentrated in areas where historical, political and economic forces have exerted the most influence on their tradition." (p. ii) Includes a literature review and interview transcripts
