Summary
Randall MIlliken, born in Oakland in 1946, grew up in Diablo Valley, a few miles inlnad from San Francisco Bay. From childhood forward, he had a deep interest in the way of life of the families who lived in the Bay Area before the European invasion. During his youth, he searched the public libraries in vain for a book that would provide him with specific information about those people. He found many books about California Indians, some suited for children, others for scholars. But none of them really satisfied his curiosity. However, in 1967, he stumbled upon the doctoral dissertation of james Bennyhoff, entitled The Ethnohistory of the Plains Miwok. Bennyhoff's book documented the histories of the tribes of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River delta region of California's Centra Valley through a study of historical diaries and reports, as well as Franciscan mission records. Through the records of Missions San Jose and San Francisco (Dolores), Bennyhoff was able to document the patterns of the inter-marriage, the languages, and the histories of the Delta groups. No similar research had been carried out for the tribes around San Francisco Bay. Miliken began such a study in 1976, and this book is the result. MIliken, who has a Ph.D. in anthropology form the University of California, Berkeley, currently lives in Davis, California, near his duaghter, Dawn, and his granddaughter, Geneva. Although he currently works as an archaeologist, he is continuing his ethnohistoric studies with mission register data, and hopes eventually to document and publish the contact period ethnogeography of the entire west Central California area
