Summary
Tower Grove Park in St. Louis, Missouri, is a 289-acre gardenesque landscape conceived and planned by Henry Shaw in the mid-1800s. In it, he made reference to an eclectic mix of aesthetic theory, horticultural expertise and methods of planting that reflect nineteenth-century British sensibilities. In concept and plan, Tower Grove Park makes reference to the first public parks in England, such as John Claudius Loudon's Derby Arboretum (1840) and Joseph Paxton's Birkenhead Park in Liverpool, England (1843). Shaw's personal papers clearly outline his intentions, both aesthetic and functional. In his ten-page proposal for Tower Grove Park, Shaw clearly states his choice of the gardenesque method of planting trees and shrubs. This direct reference to the writings of horticultural journalist John Claudius Loudon places the park firmly within the context of innovative planting and design. Shaw's interpretation of British models and aesthetic theory resulted in a unique blending of nineteenth-century sensibilities in the American Midwest
