Summary
"In recent years, there has been a proliferation of theoretical and empirical scholarship on how issues of human separateness or independence, and issues of human connectedness or interdependence, are played out during development in diverse cultural contexts: This book presents a fresh conceptualization which holds that independence and interdependence are multifaceted and interrelated dimensions of human functioning that may be defined and enacted differently in different cultures. The focus of the current volume is to consider how varied independence and interdependence issues are interrelated in cultural contexts of development through integrating historical and contemporary sources. Independence and interdependence issues are considered in relation to parental childrearing goals, parent-child interactions, educational practices, and self-construction. Considering a wide range of issues provides a productive framework for investigating the complexities of how independence and interdependence shape children's developmental experiences. This book will be of interest to academic and professional social scientists who are concerned with issues of culture and development. The book may also serve advanced undergraduates, as well as graduate students in the social sciences. Book jacket."--Jacket
