- Summary
- This dissertation examines animals and animal imagery in the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop and Seamus Heaney. The study shows that animals and animal imagery comprise a significant part of the work of Bishop and Heaney. An examination of the animal aspect of their poetry illuminates the poets' themes, techniques, and achievements as well as limits. My close reading of Bishop's "animal" poems presents the following thematic groupings: The poet at work and the art of writing; nature as religious sustenance; the intersection of nature as religion and the art of writing; the inhumanity/cruelty of humankind toward one another and toward the natural world; animals as companions, and the poet's/humankind's loneliness; the confessional poems. My close reading of Heaney's "animal" poems presents the following thematic groupings: The mature poet taking stock of his artistic career and considering his family lineage; the repeated mid-career concerns of politics, pastoral's and love's respite, and artistic responsibilities; history's coming alive; the wounded "I" and "Ireland"; early awareness of what it means to be an artist. My reading of either poet is the first from a deliberately narrowed vantage through which insight into either poet's techniques and meanings can be discerned. As such, my dissertation presents materials that more general considerations of these poets cannot
