My close reading of Heaney's "animal" poems presents the following thematic groupings: The mature poet taking stock of his artistic career and considering his family lineage; the repeated mid-career concerns of politics, pastoral's and love's respite, and artistic responsibilities; history's coming alive; the wounded "I" and "Ireland"; early awareness of what it means to be an artist. My reading of either poet is the first from a deliberately narrowed vantage through which insight into either poet's techniques and meanings can be discerned. As such, my dissertation presents materials that more general considerations of these poets cannot
