Summary
Anton Chekhov{u2019}s Selected Stories contains a wide spectrum of classics and new favorites, including 2Ward No. 6,3 2The Lady with the Little Dog,3 2Anna on the Neck,3 2The Name-Day Party,3 2The Kiss,3 An Incident at Law,3 and 2Elements Most Often Found in Novels, Short Stories, Etc.3 This edition features twenty-five brand-new translations, commissioned expressly for this volume from Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, Peter Constantine, Rosamund Bartlett, Michael Henry Heim, among others. Twenty translations have been selected from the published work of such master translators as Patrick Miles and Harvey Pitcher, Ann Dunnigan, and Ronald Hingley. Seven additional translations are by Constance Garnett, substantially revised by Cathy Popkin. All stories are annotated to clarify unfamiliar material and to point out differences in the translators{u2019} strategies. "Life and Letters" includes a rich selection of Chekhov{u2019}s letters, some in English for the first time, some with previously redacted passages restored, as well as Aileen Kelly{u2019}s portrait of Chekhov. 2Criticism3 explores the wide range of approaches and interpretations in two sections. 2Approaches3 juxtaposes five different perspectives on how to read Chekhov, represented by Peter Bitsilli, Alexander Chudakov, Robert Louis Jackson, Vladimir Kataev, and Radislav Lapushin. 2Interpretations3 contains ten divergent readings of stories in this edition. Case studies include Michael Finke on 2At Sea3; Cathy Popkin on 2[A Nervous] Breakdown3; Julie de Sherbinin on 2Peasant Women3; Liza Knapp on 2Ward No. 63; Robert Louis Jackson on 2Rothschild{u2019}s Fiddle3 and 2The Student3; Wolf Schmid on 2The Student3; John Freedman on 2Man in a Case,3 2Gooseberries,3 and 2About Love3; Caryl Emerson on 2A Calamity,3 2Anna on the Neck,3 2About Love,3 and 2The Lady with the Little Dog3; and Rufus Mathewson on 2The Lady with the Little Dog3 and 2The Beauties.3 A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are included, as is a postscript on the translators and their work. A special section, 2Comparison Translations,3 gives passages from selected stories in multiple translations. --Provided by publisher
