Summary
"Hope May offers a new interpretation of Aristotle's account of flourishing - one which incorporates Aristotle's views about the biological development of human beings. May argues that the relationship amongst the moral and intellectual virtues is best understood through the lens of developmentalism. On this view, the moral virtues are developmental preconditions for the intellectual virtues, and practical wisdom or phronesis implies the motivational system required for the development of the activities that lead to contemplative excellence. Thus, May rejects certain 'intellectualist' readings of Aristotle's ethics that assume that contemplative excellence can be severed from practical wisdom." "May goes on to show how Aristotle's theory of flourishing harmonizes with recent psychological research that demonstrates the connection between intrinsic motivation and well-being. By creatively combining Aristotle's view of human nature with this contemporary research, May constructs a modern theory of flourishing that acknowledges the fundamental role that autonomy - understood as a highly specific type of intrinsically motivated activity - plays in the good life." --Book Jacket
