Summary
Current conceptualizations of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) characterize it as being a unique combination of both psychologically-based and physiologically-based symptoms. The latter include hypervigilance, sleep disturbances, irritability, exaggerated startle response, and difficulty concentrating. These symptoms are believed to be indicative of a general increase in physiological arousal that typically is found in people diagnosed with PTSD. The present work reviews the literature concerning the psychophysiological characteristics of PTSD and seeks to address some of the shortcomings in this literature regarding the populations studied and the research methodology employed. The present investigation focused upon females who have experienced unwanted sexual events and utilized power spectral analysis of electrocardiograph data to examine sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system control of heart rate variability. The results of this study generally support findings regarding the cardiovascular characteristics of people who suffer from anxiety disorders and provided some evidence to suggest that people who have had unwanted sexual experiences manifest cardiovascular characteristics similar to those evident in people who have not suffered from other anxiety disorders. Discussion of the findings is made and directions for future research are suggested
