- Summary
- This study analyzes the change in the language and methods of communication of the Ku Klux Klan toward their intended audience. The use of whiteness, the social construction of race for personal advancement and domination, by Klan members is examined and deconstructed. Fourteen newsletters from 1980 to 1995 from various Klan organizations and the Klan Web site, www.kukluxklan.org, are examined. The literature review presents an analysis of the racist discourse of white supremacists using critical race theory as a guide and method of inquiry. Ideological content analysis is used as the method of analysis. The author of this report concludes that the language of racialism is advancing toward a publicly acceptable, less racist rhetoric. The ability of supremacist writers to manipulate language when they deem necessary is a significant advance. A substantial change in the Klan message lies in the use of mass media as opposed to community newsletters and in the Klan's greater understanding of the influence of acceptable forms of publicity. The need for analysis and for further research of this topic lies in the ability of supremacist discourse to attract and direct members of a society who are vulnerable to such persuasion, and then shape those individuals into racism's ideological mold. The review of continually adapting racist discourse and methods of communication of racist groups will serve to benefit Eurocentric societies. It is through the study and exposure of extreme racist discourse that members of a society may examine and then work to change non-extremist discourse and thus combat everyday racism in society
