Summary
A telephone survey of 91 corporate public relations practitioners and 44 corporate lawyers was conducted to reveal information about the two professions' relationships and communication styles. The professions reported strong cooperation. Lawyers were successful at accurately predicting the response of public relations practitioners, thereby providing evidence of accuracy in coorientation. However, the inverse--public relations practitioners accurately predicting the response of lawyers--was not the case. Three scales were produced via data reduction and reliability analysis to measure crisis communication items. Five scales were produced to quantify contingencies to accommodation of external publics, thereby laying the foundation for more extensive testing of the contingency theory of accommodation in public relations
