Summary
Higher education is seeing an increase in the diversity of students attending colleges and universities. There is a continual influx of individuals from various ethnicities, many of whom are first-generation college students and who typically begin their higher academic career at the community college level. It has long been recognized that various cultures contain differences with regards to beliefs, norms, expectations, and general discontinuities between home experiences and school experiences; however, the complete recognition and acceptance into application is still at a slower pace. This is a deficit within the educational process that needs to be addressed. This paper will examine the various perspectives of culture and cultural behaviors that impact the discontinuities between home and school experiences that have an affect on the academic success of the ethnic minority first-generation college student. It will address the identification to the overall importance of creating a classroom inclusive of various cultural constructs to foster academic success for the ethnic minority first generation college student
