- "The DVDs are guided, explicit demonstrations of how to seamlessly infuse culture into counseling sessions. This is a first-of-its-kind product, one that will be needed as the counseling field embraces all clients from all groups in our society. Above all fields, counseling and psychotherapy require modeling of sessions and skills in realistic settings. Here, eight sessions are conducted with narrative introductions to the central issues for working with each group. Each session has been scripted to highlight the most common topics in each area"--Set box
- [pt. 1]. A carefully illustrated counseling session, which brings out many issues common for working with African American clients. A white male counselor works with an African American professional woman on her adjustment to a new workplace and the challenges of being an ethnic minority
- [pt. 2]. In this session a White counselor helps an East Asian client deal with family and relationship dilemmas, highlighting issues that many Asian American clients face, such as duty to one's family, conforminty to group norms, obedience to parents, deference to authorities and maintenance of interpersonal harmony
- [pt. 3]. A White female counselor works with a Latino/Latina couple with alertness to some common cultural issues such as familismo, respeto, simpatia, and defined gender roles
- [pt. 4]. For many clients, religion is a central aspect of their lives. In this session, a counselor helps a conservative Christian woman incorporate her faith into the solution to her family and relationship dilemma
- [pt. 5]. Sensitive, proactive counseling work with members of sexual minorities cannot be overemphasized. In these sessions counselors gently help clients become themselves at two stages in the coming-out process: coming out to self and coming out to others
- [pt. 6]. More than 20 key practices for incorporating culture into counseling work are illustrated. Accessibility, assessment, and intervention are covered
