Summary
"This master's project represents the convergence of the traditional Jefferson City program with working for an outside new organization. In this case, I worked for the Joplin Globe in Joplin, Missouri as their statehouse correspondent. The challenge of starting up a new, one-person bureau for a newspaper that has not covered the Capitol in several years (their former correspondent died and was never replaced) was a challenge I was eager to meet. Thankfully, it was also mitigated by working out of the journalism school offices. By combining the resources and guidance available through the Jefferson City program with the job of reporting for a separate news organization, I was able to focus my reporting efforts on the needs of one newspaper, while benefiting from the institutional knowledge and experience of the university faculty. Included here are the dozens of stories I wrote for the Globe during the course of Missouri legislative session. The true nature of the work involved in learning to be a Capitol reporter is not necessarily reflected in the published stories themselves, but they do provide a record of my written work and hopefully, improvement, as the session continued. The frenetic environment of the Capitol while the General Assembly is in session necessitated that daily reporting be the bulk of my project. As I came to understand, this is the usual scenario for reporters large and small in the Missouri Capitol press corps during the session. Even so, I attempted to utilize some of the computer-assisted and investigative tools I had learned through my studies whenever possible. Some of those projects are also included here. Finally, the professional analysis portion of this project centers around the use of sources by the Capitol press corps--with a particular emphasis on the use of electronic information. It also discusses the challenges of pursuing in-depth reporting during the legislative session, and managing what can be an exciting, but also a demanding workload."--P. 3
