Tissue engineers have recently developed Tissue Engineered Blood Vessels (TEBV), grown from a patient's own cells, to combat arteriosclerosis. Before they can be used in the body, however, a method of quality control must be determined in order to assess the biomechanical compatibility of the vessels. Optical Tomography (OT) has the potential to be an effective imaging method to determine biomechanical properties because it meets the requirements (nondestructive and minimally invasive) of the quality control method. In addition, OT emerged as an imaging modality worthy of investigation due to its favorable qualities: inexpensive and compact components, a known mathematical solution, and the potential for very fast acquisition. The goal of this project was to acquire cross-sectional images of TEBV in order to assess OT as an imaging modality. The OT system was designed to image weakly scattering specimens, such as TEBV, in an effort to eventually determine biomechanical properties. The system is completely automated and derives the images from the amount of non-scattered light collected by a detector. The vessels, supplied by Cytograft Tissue Engineering, were imaged using an OT system and the results show the feasibility of OT as an imaging method. The system can also be applied to other tissue-engineered constructs
