The sense of touch is an important alternative for vision substitution. For visually impaired individuals, a big challenge is to obtain spatial information that is critical in daily tasks such as navigation, reading, and accessing graphical computers. Tactile displays have been shown to deliver spatial information through the tactile channel by contacting the skin directly. Meanwhile, design and performance of tactile displays are highly dependent on sensory characteristics of receptive body regions. Past psychophysical studies indicate that lips are highly sensitive, leading one to imagine a wearable lip-based tactile display that is easy to use and allows hands-free operation. As lips have never been utilized for tactile display applications, we are conducting preliminary study on the sensitivity and discriminating ability of the lips. An electrotactile stimulation system has developed with NI PCI-6024E board, and the system generates 6 software-controlled digital lines and 2 hardware-controlled pulse trains. After passing through a 32-channel stimulation generating circuit, the system delivers electrotactile stimulation to an array of 4 x 8 stimulators with controllable waveform parameters and spatial patterns. In addition, experiments of threshold measurement and two-line separation are being performed using three stimulator arrays of different size. These experiments may reveal some of important sensory characteristics of lips for electrotactile pattern presentation
