Summary
This study attempts to use social survey methods and psychological processes to study an issue that may be threatening the reliability and validity of media survey research. An experiment was conducted to study some ways in which the mood of a respondent may be affecting media survey data. The experiment consisted of manipulating the mood of the participants with a newspaper article before they filled out a survey questionnaire. Congruency effects can be seen to prevail, with the respondents who were induced with the positive article tending to respond more positively than those who were induced by a negative article. Results suggest that mood can be a key variable that needs to be measured prior to conducting a survey, or a contextual mood may be appropriate prior to participation in a media survey
