Summary
This study was intended to explore the premise that the ability to secure quality leadership for public schools will be enhanced through the identification of the salient intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics which motivate individuals to seek leadership positions. Two hundred and one district leaders from seven Midwestern states representing rural, urban and suburban districts completed the Factors Influencing Leadership Applicants survey. Responses were analyzed based demographics, intrinsic and extrinsic attributes and gender. Data analysis identified a linear relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivational attributes, statistical differences between the means for individual intrinsic and extrinsic items, as well as statistical differences between subscale means with participants rating intrinsic attributes as more motivating. Specific intrinsic motivators of personal satisfaction, ability to initiate change, the ability to impact education and the benefit of the prospective applicant's skills to the recruiting district were rated with the most influence on potential applicants. The most influential extrinsic variables were identified with variety of responsibilities associated with the position, job location and salary. Some numerical differences were noted based on gender, however overall findings supported a premise that motivational factors for applicants for positions of school leadership may be viewed as gender-neutral
