Summary
The purpose of this study is to explore the spatiotemporal order of a school, revealing how various structures affect the routine action of its members. The researcher contends that schools (architecture) are built for order and that calendars and schedules are traditional constructs that regulate the spacings and timings of social activity. Because these familiar structures are purposively constructed and acted upon, the dynamic between the spatiotemporal order of the school and notions of power among the participants have been described and discussed. This ethnographic study has been conducted in a middle school in a growing city in the Midwest. Taking the participant-observer role, the researcher assumed the role of a sixth grade student and attended instructional core classes for 158 of the 174 attendance days of the school year. Data had been collected in observational fieldnotes, informal and formal interviews, and prolonged engagement in routine activity. The spatiotemporal order of the middle school has been described, making explicit how this produced order shapes and has been shaped by routine action. In addition, the dynamic between the spatiotemporal order and the power and control of daily school life has been presented. A framework for examining the social order in an organization has been constructed
