"Overview--The ability to detect a cardiac murmur and evaluate its characteristics is an important contribution to the patient's clinical assessment. Experience and a working knowledge of normal parameters are essential to the skill of interpretation of auscultatory findings. To assist in the expansion of knowledge and skills in auscultation, this program presents fundamental principles of the pathophysiology of heart murmurs and demonstrates acoustic characteristics of the more common significant murmurs. Beginning with a review of normal cardiac function and anatomic structure, the effects of valvular regurgitation and stenosis are reviewed. The presentation of systolic and diastolic murmurs identifies the types that may be heard, explaining the most important characteristics and clinical significance of each."--Container
