Summary
This story collection examines the lives of various Alabamians living on or near Highway 82, a mostly two-lane road that begins in Alamogordo, N.M., and ends in Jekyll Island, Ga. The collection's opening and closing stories, "Cross Garden" and "Blues Old Stand," trace an interracial couple's return from the western end of the highway to the Deep South, reversing the path of the Westward Expansion. As they move east into Alabama, they find themselves pulled off the highway into the entanglements of the culture and Reg's familial past, suggesting that the highway cannot free them from surrounding society and culture, let alone rescue them from their own demons. The other stories, meanwhile, are designed to stand on their own, and occur in different periods of recent history. However, the stories all occur in towns along Highway 82, and notions of progress and individual freedom of movement (represented by the highway) are usually at odds with the power of race, place, gender, and general culture in these stories. Meanwhile, the introduction explores how the work of an evolutionary cognitive psychologist, Robert Kegan, sheds light on the craft of character development, using attitudes toward race in the work of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mark Twain, Richard Wright, and Flannery O'Connor as examples
