Summary
This study used a person-centered approach to examine whether relatively homogenous subgroups of adolescents could be identified based on profiles of risk factors from individual, family, peer, and broader contextual domains. Data were drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), which includes a nationally representative sample of 7th through 12th graders ( N = 6,500). Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to identify possible subgroups of adolescents. Developmental differences were investigated by estimating latent profile models separately for 7th and 11th graders. Relations of subgroup membership identified in the LPAs to adolescent reported depressive symptoms and conduct problems also were considered. These analyses examined the associations of subgroup membership to criterion measures both concurrently and over time (approximately 1 and a half and 7 years after the initial assessment). Findings indicated that a 2-class solution provided the best fit to the data for 7th graders (Low Risk [88%] and High Risk [12%] groups), whereas a 3-class solution was indicated as the best fit for 11th graders (Low Risk [42%], High Risk [14%], and Socioeconomic Disadvantage [43%] groups). Class membership identified in the selected LPAs was a significant cross-sectional, longitudinal, and, in several instances, prospective (statistically controlling for initial scores on outcome indices) predictor of measures of depressive symptomatology and conduct problems. Although LPA appears to offer a promising approach for increasing understanding of risk factors for adolescent psychopathology, results highlight several key challenges for future person-centered research
