Summary
The application of polyacrylamide (PAM, a long-chain polymer) is one of the newest methods to reduce soil loss and runoff. This research examined the influence of PAM on runoff and interrill erosion under rainfall impact at terminal and less than terminal velocities. The research also evaluated and modified interrill erosion prediction equations for conditions at terminal and less than terminal velocities. Results from this study found that soil loss and runoff were reduced by as much as 98% and 90%, respectively, with the addition of PAM. The accuracy of the existing soil loss prediction equations was increased by 18% with regards to the square of rainfall intensity, droplet energy, and the addition of a soil stability factor.
