Summary
This journalism master's project includes a professional work component and an analysis component. The professional work component details the author's experiences working as an investigative journalist at Investigative Newsource, a non-profit news organization based in San Diego, California. The author produced stories on Congressman Bob Filner's bid for San Diego mayor, the East-West coast battle over shipping routes and commerce in the wake of the Panama Canal expansion in 1915, and the import of guns through the port of San Diego. Includes field notes and examples of work. In the analysis component the author examines the deliberative process privileges of ten states (Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, and Hawaii) in their open records and open meeting laws to determine "how open government varies on a state-by-state basis, to what degree we can predict how transparent a certain state will be, and what factors correlate with transparency and secrecy." (p. 153) Includes a literature review
