Summary
This journalism master's project includes a professional work component and a research component. [Volume 1] is the professional work component, and comprises a research manual created by the author, entitled "Researching and reporting on occupational health: a guide for journalists and mass communication researchers," that "survey[s] news reports, popular non-fiction books, and scholarly literature on occupational medicine and occupational safety and health to create a practical guide for researching and reporting on occupational health issues." (v.1, p. 3) [Volume 2] is the research component, entitled "Cold War casualties: occupational disease and deception in the beryllium industry," which "focuses on the tale of one small group of workers in one small, economically-depressed coal town in Pennsylvania [Hazleton]. Workers who, weary of the chronic unemployment that plagued their hometown in the decade following World War II, took a new job in a new factory producing an exciting new 'space-age metal' called beryllium. They ended up with a new space-age occupational disease [Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD)]." (v. 2, pref., p. 3) It tells the story of beryllium, its effects on health, some of the stories of people with the disease, and what the Atomic Energy Commission did or didn't do about dealing with beryllium and its safety concern
