- Summary
- This journalism master's project includes a professional work component and a research component. The professional work component details the author's experiences working in Washington, D.C. as a correspondent for the Nashville Banner and the Anniston (Ala.) Star to cover Southern politics. Includes field notes and examples of work. 1994's midterm elections showed a shift in control of the political South, especially at the congressional level, from Democratic to Republican. The purpose of the research component, entitled, Republican realignment in the South: causes a [sic] and effects as viewed by newspapers and reporters, is twofold. "One aim is to examine how the events of 1994 were covered by selected newspapers. The examination of coverage ... begin[s] by determining the level of coverage given to election news ... It ... look[s] at how newspapers explained the election results and political processes at work, with special emphasis on whether voters made a permanent shift in party allegiance. (The precise term for such a shift in political science circles is a 'realignment.') The second part ... draw[s] on the expertise and judgement of regional correspondents to consider whether the reasoning offered by the newspapers is valid and fits with the long term patterns they see in Southern politics." (VII, research results) Includes a literature review
