- Summary
- This book introduces various 3D printing systems, biomaterials, and cells for organ printing. In view of the latest applications of several 3D printing systems, their advantages and disadvantages are also discussed. A basic understanding of the entire spectrum of organ printing provides pragmatic insight into the mechanisms, methods, and applications of this discipline. Organ printing is being applied in the tissue engineering field with the purpose of developing tissue/organ constructs for the regeneration of both hard (bone, cartilage, osteochondral) and soft tissues (heart). There are other potential application areas including tissue/organ models, disease/cancer models, and models for physiology and pathology, where in vitro 3D multicellular structures developed by organ printing are valuable

- Biographical or historical data
- Professor Dong-Woo Cho received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1986. Since then he has been a professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Pohang University of Science and Technology. He is director of the Center for Rapid Prototyping-based 3D Tissue/Organ printing. His research interests include 3D microfabrication based on 3D printing technology, its application to tissue engineering, and more generally to bio-related fabrication. He has recently focused on tissue/organ printing technology and the development of high-performance bioinks. He has received several prestigious awards in these academic areas. He serves or has served on the editorial boards of several international journals. Professor Cho has published over 210 academic papers in various international journals in the field of manufacturing and tissue engineering, and has contributed chapters to ten books related to tissue engineering and organ printing. Jung-Seob Lee is an Integrated MS/PhD student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). He received his BS at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Busan University in 2010. His research interests is the development and improvement of 3D printing systems and its application to the regeneration of large volume composite tissue with complex shapes. His current research is to develop a 3D printed ear and to regenerate auricular cartilage for microtia patients. Professor Falguni Pati is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at IIT Hyderabad, India. He received his ME in Biomedical Engineering from Jadavpur University, India and completed his PhD in Bioengineering from IIT Kharagpur, India. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Lab, POSTECH, South Korea from 2011 to 2014 and in the Division of Nanobiotechnology at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) from 2014 to 2015. His research interests include 3D bioprinting, tissue/organ models, novel bioinks, and tissue engineering. He has published 15 peer reviewed journal articles and four book chapters. He has also applied for two patents with his co-workers. Jin Woo Jung is an Integrated MS/PhD student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). He received his BS at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hanyang University in 2009. His research interests are the development and improvement of 3D printing and its CAD/CAM technology. His current research is in 3D printing-based clinical applications, such as the reconstruction of a new nose for an arhinia patient, reconstruction of depressed malar region, and development of customized augmentation rhinoplasty using 3D printing systems. Jinah Jang is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). She received her BSc(Eng) in Mechanical Design and Automation Engineering at Seoul National University of Technology in 2010 and her PhD in the Division of Integrative Biosciences and Biotechnology at POSTECH in 2015. Her current research interests are to develop the functional tissue-derived decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) bioinks for 3D bioprinting of tissue analogues. In particular, she applies this technology to both regenerative medicine and in vitro tissue modeling for cardiovascular disease. She has received several awards including excellent presentation, excellent publication and young investigator presentation awards in 2014-2015. Jeong Hun Park is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Korea from 2015. He received his BS and ME in Precision Mechanical Engineering at Chungbuk National University, and completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at POSTECH. His current research interests are the development of 3D printing systems, 3D printing of target-specific functional scaffolds using various biomaterials, and the building of 3D tissue/organ constructs for tissue regeneration.
