- Summary
- The purpose of the study was to ascertain if new trade and industry and health occupations (T&I and HO) instructors who participated in Missouri's New Teacher Institute (NTI) perceived the material presented in the institute as important to their teaching experiences in the first one to two years of teaching. NTI is a full year program designed for induction of new vocational teachers. The part of the program examined by this study was a two-week seminar attended either prior to teaching or the summer after the first year of teaching. The seminar was divided into daily themes for teaching and covered a wide variety of topics deemed important for new teachers. It is important for adult learners to perceive what they are being taught as useful in order for them to learn. This research was designed to ask that question. Four research questions were formulated for the study. The questions regarded the perceptions of the participants at the conclusion of the two-week seminar, at the conclusion of the first year of teaching, and the differences of the perceptions of the teacher sub-groups: secondary, post-secondary, health occupations, and trade and industry. Participants were surveyed at the end of the initial seminar and again at the end of the first year of teaching. A survey response rate of 90% was obtained. Hypothesis I was rejected based on the findings that there were statistically significant differences between the perceptions of the T&I and the HO instructors and between the secondary and the post-secondary instructors. Hypothesis 2 was not rejected. No significant differences were noted between the perceptions of the participants at the end of the two-week seminar and at the end of the first year of teaching. Conclusions to the study were that students of NTI perceived the topics presented as significant and/or essential to their success as a teacher, differences between the subgroups are small and likely explained by outside factors, and perceptions of the importance of topics remains constant over time
