Summary
This journalism master's project includes a professional work component and an analysis component. The professional work component details the author's experiences working as an intern at Sports Illustrated. Having the position of reporter, the author engaged in research, fact checking, collaboration with other authors, and the creation of various forms of online and print content. Includes field notes and examples of work. In the analysis component the author examines the media portrayal of athletes as role models using Framing Theory and Uses and Gratifications Theory. The author performed content analysis on 15 stories from Sports Illustrated and ESPN online and conducted six informal focus groups with university students in order to elicit information about how sportswriters' framing of stories effected the audiences' perception of the athlete as a role model. Includes a literature review, interview transcripts and a publishable professional analysis piece entitled "Media framing of athletes as role models: what determines audience perceptions about and attitudes toward athletes?"
