Summary
The present study was an investigation of attitudes toward seeking help from a mental health professional as a function of problem-solving appraisal, future time perspective and recent stressful life events. The impact of several demographic variables on help-seeking attitudes was also considered. One-hundred and seventy-four adult women, recruited from professional and service organizations, completed the Problem Solving Inventory, the Future Time Perspective Test, the Life Events Survey and a short demographic questionnaire. Problem solving appraisal and future time perspective were related to attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help, with self-appraised problem solving ability being the strongest predictor. Stressful life events did not relate to attitudes toward seeking help. The contributions of problem solving appraisal and future time perspective were relatively independent; the predicted interaction between these two cognitive/personality factors was not found. None of the demographic variables investigated were related to attitudes toward seeking professional help. Correlations were found between the instruments measuring self-appraised problem solving ability, future time perspective and attitudes toward seeking help. Various factors of the three scales were also correlated with one another and with total scale scores. The results of the study were discussed in relation to the research on help seeking as a coping strategy, along with implications for counseling practice and suggestions for future research
