Summary
This journalism master's project includes a professional work component and a research component. The professional work component details the author's experiences working as an intern at The Texas Observer in Austin, Texas, a biweekly, progressive news magazine (the staff refers to it as a newspaper) dealing with Texan politics and culture. Includes field notes and examples of work. The ownership of the Observer was transferred to a federally registered non-profit organization. "In order to receive this status, which confers tax benefits, the Observer can devote only a small fraction of its finances towards 'advocacy.'" (Appendix I, [p. 2]) In the research component, entitled, IRS restrictions on non-profit publishers: the meaning of "lobbying," "advocacy" and "educational method," the author discusses "the effects that this restriction has had on the left-leaning Observer, ... compare[s] it with editorial policy and editorial content of several other political newsmagazines, and discuss[es] government oversight procedures." (Appendix I, [p. 2]) Includes a literature review
