Summary
This journalism master's project includes a professional work component and a research component. The professional work component details the author's experiences working as a reporter, primarily for the Southeast Journal in Atlanta, which is a weekly addition to the Wall Street Journal that provides regional coverage of Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina and Tennessee. Includes field notes and examples of work. In the research component the author states: "I want to expose the mechanics of reporting a story that could be labeled 'literary journalism.' [Tom] Wolfe says many literary journalists face a similar accusation--'The bastards are making it up!'--and I want to show that most of them are not merely great writers, but exceptional reporters who are able to document scenes, dialogue and emotions that are inaccessible to most journalists. By contacting those writers, I hope to be able to explain where the reporter stands, when he uses his tape recorder, how he uses instruments of measurement, whether he uses documents, how many interviews he does and so on and so on." (proposal, p. 1-2) In other words, the author "endeavors to examine the reporting mechanics of a few literary journalists ..." (research, p. 8) Includes a literature review and interview transcripts from interviews with Rick Bragg (New York Times), Tom French (St. Petersburg Times), Gary Pomerantz (Atlanta Journal-Constitution), Tom Hallman, Jr. (Portland Oregonian), Bruce DeSilva (Associated Press), Miles Corwin (Los Angeles Times) and Bill Luening (Kansas City Star)
