Summary
This study presents the current state of the education production function literature, and suggests that the missing variables sought by many economists of education may be found among the psychological factors which educational psychologists suggest play an incentive role for students. The incentive factor selected for study in this analysis is locus of control. This study constructs a three level hierarchical linear model using National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS 88) data of linear growth and change in locus of control on math standardized test scores. The results of this model provide evidence, first, that locus of control is a significant explanatory variable for math standardized test scores. Second, that two commonly cited negative influences on minority student performance (urbanicity and segregation) influence math achievement test scores through their influence on a student's change in locus of control. Third, that the missing variables sought by economists of education will have to be found among the dynamic factors which affect the education production process, and not among static variables describing student ethnic, family environmental, or school environmental characteristics
