Summary
This study was a response to the discussion in special education literature concerning the need for greater interaction and quality of interaction among those involved in providing services for children with disabilities and their families. Few studies have attempted to provide data that quantitatively describe existing levels of interaction or its qualities among families with a disabled child. Social capital, an emerging sociological model formally introduced by James Coleman (1988), provides a conceptual framework allowing analysis of the effects of interactions among individuals on educational outcomes. If capital is defined as assets available for use in the production of further assets, then social capital, in the educational context, can be broadly viewed as the use of social interconnectedness to produce better educational outcomes--unarguably an asset to families and communities. The primary focus of this study was to empirically examine possible differences in social capital between two groups of parents: those who have children in special education programs, and those who do not. Data for the study came from parent questionnaires associated with the Missouri School Improvement Program. The two family types were compared using ANOVA analyses, and no statistically significant differences were found. Implications for future research were discussed
