- Listening is a topic that seems sadly neglected in the educational process. In school we learn to read and write and sometimes to give speeches, but seldom do we get any formal training in how to listen ... This book is designed to do exactly that- to explain to students what to do in order to listen well. Because we can't see someone listening, we seem to assume that listening is a passive process, something that somehow "gets done" rather than an active process that people have to work at. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Listening is, in fact, hard work, and you have to know what you're doing to be a good listening. Hearing is a natural process, but listening is not
