Summary
Oral narratives have been used as a tool to hand down traditions and superstitions since the beginning of civilization. Modern theorists maintain that television has usurped the oral narrative tradition and has become the myth maker or "bard" or modern culture. For the purposes of this study, three episodes of six representative situation comedies were analyzed for their narrative structure. The sitcoms selected represent television programs which span the history of the television medium. A scene function analysis of each sitcom was performed to determine how the narrative was formed in each and to determine whether a narrative "grammar" for television was developed during the evolution of the situation comedy
