- "Extraordinary" because "If this book were fiction, I should receive a note from a publisher's reader saying, 'All of us here feel your imagination has run away with you in allowing one of your principal female characters three simultaneous lovers; we feel it is excessive to have two of the three cripples; none of us is happy about your failure to build up to the marriage of [Gouvernor] Morris and Miss Randolph. As you have it, she simply appears as a result of implausible chance, and to have her accused of two murders and almost unmentionable other crimes is, to put it mildly, melodrama at its worst. We attach a list of similar items.' As to the story of Morris's life, I have told it without surmise, except where it is plainly labeled"--Foreword, Page vii
