Summary
Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV, is characterized by a recurrent pattern of negativistic, defiant, and hostile behavior towards authority figures. The purpose of the present study was to examine the prevalence of ODD in childhood and adulthood and explore different courses of ODD (childhood-limited, adult-limited, and life-course persistent ODD). Further, this study attempted to address negative correlates of ODD by examining associations among different courses of ODD and adult alcohol problems. Adult-limited and life-course persistent ODD were found to be predictive of adult alcohol problems, but childhood-limited ODD was not. Results from this study emphasize the need for further research on the course of ODD from childhood through adulthood and suggest that consideration of different courses of ODD is important in illuminating correlates of the disorder.
