Summary
The current paper proposed and tested a new hypothesis about the nature of the relationship between eating pathology and sexual functioning in women. The Body Image Hypothesis predicted that this relationship would be best accounted for by body image dissatisfaction. One hundred female undergraduates with no reported eating pathology and 106 females (65 undergraduates, 39 outpatient clients) with at least moderate levels of eating pathology completed a packet of self-report measures of sexual functioning, eating pathology, body image, depression, and sexual abuse. Body image dissatisfaction was not significantly predictive of sexual functioning for either group, though several other characteristics associated with eating disorders were predictive. Statistical control of depression and sexual abuse affected the predictive ability of several eating-related constructs. Explanations, implications, and suggestions for future research are discussed
