Summary
Purpose of the study . This study examined the relationship between hope (Snyder, Harris, et al., 1991) and psychological sense of community (McMillan & Chavis, 1986) in college students, faculty, and staff at a small, private, two-year, liberal arts college for women. Participants included 158 students, and 93 faculty and staff. Participants were surveyed using the Hope Scale (Snyder, Harris, et al., 1991), and the Sense of Community Index short form (Chavis, Florin, Rich, & Wandersman, 1987) adapted for use in the campus community. Findings . Psychological sense of community and student leader predicted 10.5% of the variance in student hope. Residential experience, hope, faculty experience, and undecided major predicted 30% of the variation in student psychological sense of community. Psychological sense of community predicted only 2.7% of the variance in hope for faculty and staff. Age, administrative classification, sponsor, and ethnicity predicted 23.2% of the variation in psychological sense of community for faculty and staff. This study provided initial insight into the relationship between hope and psychological sense of community. Psychological sense of community appears to be an important aspect of educational environments that engender hope in women students. The Hope Scale (Snyder, Harris, et al., 1991) and the Sense of Community Index Chavis et al., 1987) are useful tools for higher education professionals. They can be used to identify students in need of assistance, as measures of program or intervention outcomes, and to identify characteristics and experiences that promote hope and psychological sense of community among students, faculty, and staff
