- Summary
- "The Saddest Country takes the reader on a journey through Colombia to remote locations and incisive conclusions. Nicholas Coghlan, Political Counsellor at the Canadian Embassy in Bogota from 1997 to 2000, weaves together a personal and political account of a three-year odyssey fuelled by his obsession with Colombia. His dangerous journeys put him in contact with guerrilla leaders and women's rights activists, ministers and gold miners, drug traffickers and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Travelling to tell the tale, Coghlan relates his attempts to interpret Colombia's complex and blood-soaked civil war for the bureaucrats in Ottawa and his efforts at lobbying Colombian authorities on human rights and assisting victims of the violence."--BOOK JACKET
