Summary
  • "This work argues that in mapping out a particular performance space for themselves, late nineteenth-century women's travel and travel literature revealed changes in the way society thought about women. A key advantage of the book is its interdisciplinary nature. Although it will most obviously appeal to people interested in the field of nineteenth-century women's travel writing, it also contains substantial material on British imperialism, cultural studies, and gender roles. One of its strengths is the connection it makes between these discourses. Another strength is that it addresses issues of interest in the field, as seen particularly in chapter 4, which considers the politics of self-advertisement as they shaped Kate Marsden's self-image and reception in the press
  • Other questions of both general and critical interest, such as vestimentary display in its guise as exhibitionary colonialist language are also raised."--BOOK JACKET
