- Summary
- The objective of this study is to understand the nature of chunking in immediate recall. Two general hypotheses were compared: one in which working memory holds only a set of pointers to the information to be recalled, the pointer-only hypothesis (POH), and another in which working memory holds not only the pointer, but also additional material, the pointer-plus hypothesis (PPH). The POH predicted that lists of two-word chunks would be recalled as well as lists of the same number of one-word chunks, whereas the PPH predicted better recall of one-word chunks. Two immediate-recall experiments (one free recall and one serial recall) were conducted with verbal sequences of different lengths containing word singletons or learned word pairs. The results suggest that a set of pointers is sometimes used alone and sometimes supplemented by additional material. These results are interpreted within a dual-processing framework including capacity-limited chunk storage and time-limited phonological storage in working memory. The balance between these mechanisms might be a strategic issue
