Summary

"For my professional project I worked in the downtown newsroom of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The previous summer, I was a general assignment reporter at the newspaper covering everything from archaeological digs to lemonade stand closings to tornado strikes. ... The errors I made introduced me to the newspaper's strict corrections policy that tracks corrections internally to try to help staffers pinpoint weaknesses and avoid future mistakes. The realization that the newspaper was tracking my errors was painful, but forced me to think about accuracy more seriously. That's when I decided I wanted to find out more about the correction tracker to find out whether it fulfills its goal of preventing mistakes. I also wondered whether the tracker created a chilling effect in the newsroom that caused editors and reporters to hide their mistakes. The two big questions I wanted to explore for my professional analysis were: 1) Does the Post-Dispatch's internal correction tracking database help improve accuracy? 2) Does the newspaper's internal correction tracker cause reporters to hide their errors?"-P. 4-5
