- Summary
- This journalism master's project includes a professional work component and an analysis component. The professional work component entitled "CAR reporting at the Center for Public Integrity" details the author's experiences working as a computer-assisted reporting (CAR) intern at the Center for Public Integrity. The author worked with databases and other electronic resources to aid investigative reporting done at the Center. Includes field notes and examples of work. In the analysis component entitled "For data journalism, communication--internal and external--is key" the author examines the Los Angeles Times' value-added analysis of teacher performance story as "an example of data-driven, public-interest reporting and [talked] to journalists who were in positions to make editorial decisions about how that reporting was presented to the public." (p. 4) Through a gatekeeping theoretical framework, the author explores various issues and questions regarding the best practices of data journalism and its application in investigative reporting. Includes a literature review
