Summary
The main part of this dissertation work was devoted to developing new attenuation and scatter correction algorithms for Tc99m-based and Tl-201 myocardial perfusion SPECT. A dual-photopeak attenuation correction algorithm (DPA) was invented to correct energy- and space-dependent attenuation of Tl-201 imaging by utilizing {u223C}72 and 167 keV images, relative photon abundances of both energies and reference attenuation coefficient from Gd-153. An iterative algorithm (IESD) was invented to perform effective scatter correction by iteratively improving the energy resolution of gamma camera to allow separating photopeak and scatter components in an energy spectrum. Scatter correction was performed by rejecting scatter components using a narrow energy window ({u223C}several keV). Tc99m and Tl-201 phantom studies demonstrated the capabilities of new algorithms in correcting attenuation and scatter artifacts in cardiac phantoms. Their capabilities were further tested in early posts-stress Tc99m-Sestamibi imaging, Tl-201 imaging and peak-stress Tc99m-Teboroxime imaging. The promising results supported that the new algorithms can provide potential solutions for solving the attenuation and scatter problems in these three imagings. In the future, successful clinical validation of the new algorithms will bring a new advance of imaging techniques to myocardial perfusion SPECT
